Brushing Your Teeth Right: Common Mistakes
14 October 2026 · 2 min read
Brushing is a habit we all repeat every day, yet many of us don't do it quite right. Technique errors are one of the most common causes of cavities and gum problems.
How long should you brush?
The general advice is to brush twice a day for at least two minutes each time, giving equal attention to every surface: the front, the back and the chewing surfaces.
Common mistakes
- Pressing too hard: this can cause gum recession and wear down the enamel.
- Brushing only the front surfaces: the backs and chewing surfaces get skipped.
- Keeping an old brush: once the bristles splay out they clean less well, so replacing it about every three months is recommended.
- Neglecting floss and interdental brushes: the spaces between teeth cannot be cleaned properly with a brush alone.
Right after eating?
Brushing straight after acidic food and drinks can stress the enamel. It is better to wait a while and rinse your mouth with water. Ask your dentist what routine suits you best.
